Brewer Chat: Pato Thornycroft of Lake Bluff Brewing

LAKE BLUFF, ILLINOIS

If you're not from the sleepy northern Chicago suburb, beer probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Lake Bluff, Illinois. Perhaps it's a nice looking village that whisks by when you're on your evening Metra commute. Perhaps it's the proximity to the small but picturesque beach less than a mile from the train track.

We're here to tell you that you should hop on the Metra, get on your bike, jump in your car, or pretty much do whatever it takes to spend an afternoon in Lake Bluff. Why? Lake Bluff Brewing Company and brewer Pato Thornycroft are brewing award winning beer that will appeal to every type of beer drinker in a comfortable, but still quirky enough to be interesting, setting. As we discovered on a Sunday morning bike ride from the city, there's a whole lot more to Lake Bluff and it's new brewing company than you might think.

BLOOMINGTON, IN

Bloomington, Indiana favorite, Upland Brewing is set to hit the Chicago market by early October, helping warm Hoosiers' craft beer hearts all over the city. Of course, their aim isn't just to ignite nostalgia for IU grads, but to let all Chicagoans in on a little something: Indiana is brewing. Here in Chicago, we're all well familiar with the expansive 3 Floyds portfolio and occasionally see the likes of Sun King or ShoreLine around the city. Indianapolis' craft scene is booming and the Hoosier state has plenty of reasons to be proud. One of them, Upland Brewing Company has, until now, remained nearly hidden from folks in Chicago. One of their brewers, Patrick Lynch, caught up with us to discuss their flagship and experimental brews, what it's like brewing in a college town, and what we can expect as they take on the Windy City.
